American GI Forum of My City Is My Home welcomes veterans and community members who want to support veteran advocacy, housing education, homeowner support, community outreach, and local service.

Membership Is the Best Way to Stay Connected

You do not have to be a member to volunteer, attend events, or support the work. However, membership is the best way to stay connected, vote, help guide priorities, and serve consistently.

Annual membership dues are $20 per year. Dues help support local outreach, meetings, advocacy, education, and community service.

Renters, homeowners, seniors, disabled residents, voucher holders, and families who understand local housing barriers.

Professionals & Partners

Realtors, attorneys, housing counselors, tax professionals, social workers, contractors, lenders, and others who can help with specific projects.

Veteran Housing Advocacy

Helping expand fair housing choice for veterans using HUD-VASH and Housing Choice Vouchers.

Housing Finder

Supporting a free rental map that helps residents search for apartments that may work with common housing barriers.

Housing Helper

Improving a free AI-powered housing assistant for renters, homeowners, veterans, seniors, and families.

Property Tax Outreach

Helping homeowners learn about property tax protests, homestead exemptions, senior exemptions, and disabled veteran benefits.

Homeowner Education

Sharing information about Transfer on Death Deeds, inherited property, foreclosure concerns, and homeowner resources.

Community Events

Supporting outreach tables, workshops, veteran events, back-to-school events, and partner resource fairs.

Monthly Membership Meetings

Members and those interested in joining are invited to attend our monthly meetings.

When: Every third Wednesday
Time: 6:30 p.m.
Format: In person and virtual option available

About the American GI Forum

The American GI Forum has a long history of veteran service, civil rights, education, and community advocacy. Founded by Dr. Hector P. Garcia in 1948, the organization grew from the need to address discrimination and barriers faced by Mexican American veterans returning from military service.

American GI Forum of My City Is My Home continues that tradition locally through veteran housing advocacy, housing education, homeowner support, civic engagement, and community service.

Our work is open to veterans and community members who want to help strengthen housing access, opportunity, and dignity for San Antonio families.

Ways Members Help

You do not need to volunteer every week to make a difference. Members can help based on their time, skills, lived experience, and availability.

Outreach & Events

Help at resource tables, community events, workshops, and veteran events.

Phone & Follow-Up

Help make calls, send follow-up messages, and connect residents to the right starting point.

Housing Finder Support

Help verify apartment information, update listings, and document housing barriers.

Homeowner Education

Help share property tax, homestead exemption, TODD, and homeowner resource information.

Advocacy

Help share videos, attend public meetings, support testimony, and educate the community on veteran housing issues.

Fundraising & Partnerships

Help connect sponsors, donors, churches, businesses, nonprofits, and neighborhood groups.

Professional Volunteers

Professionals are still welcome to support specific projects, workshops, technical questions, or short-term volunteer needs.

We especially welcome help from real estate professionals, attorneys, housing counselors, tax professionals, financial counselors, contractors, lenders, social workers, nonprofit professionals, and others with housing-related experience.

Professional volunteers do not have to commit long-term. Even one workshop, one review, one referral, or one event can help.

UTSA Student Opportunities

UTSA students may be able to support community projects through the Center for Civic and Community-Engaged Leadership. Student service has helped strengthen projects like the Housing Finder and Housing Helper.

Students interested in civic engagement, community-based service, and internship opportunities can learn more through UTSA.

Do I have to be a veteran to join?

No. Veterans and community members are welcome to apply for membership.

How much are dues?
